The windows XP Update Scanner is an unofficial tool
I initially created this to detect missing Windows Xp Professional Updates (and then the project grew)

It now also looks for Home, MCE 2005, PosReady 2009, XP Embedded, Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC's and also IE6, IE7 and IE8 updates along with Microsoft .NET Version 1.0 SP3 right through to Version 4.0

It only supports Scanning on Service Pack 3, However, if you run it on an SP2 system it will offer the ability to dump a known SP2 updates list that covers every update im aware of. Though some SP2 stuff will no doubt be superseded. But, I designed this primarily for systems running SP3.

It doesn't require any 3rd party downloads such as visual basic, Microsoft .NET or anything else at all. This software looks at your registry for hotfix information and it also looks into some folders to check for certain files.

The whole thing was written in Notepad.exe by hand and took two weeks, a few hours each night testing and debugging.

While i have done my best to code it in a way where it can define XP Home, Professional, MCE 2005 and Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC's, only your feedback can really improve its functionality.
Though i gotta say, I have done some serious testing with it.

To me, this program is a homage to two decades of creativity, It's almost 2020, SO I'm giving something back to XP itself.. While folks rave on about software and hardware, the OS was only ever mentioned when it crashed... and its always just been taken for granted while people spoke more highly of things it ran... Those who know me, they know the kinda stuff ive created upon Windows XP, and before that Windows 98SE.

So ive given XP and its users the capability to do something they won't even fully comprehend until 2027, I could no doubt be dead by then, but this will live on... This software will be very useful..
(when that Microsoft Update Active X dropdown fails because the ActiveX Certificates Expired, if the sites even live)

On MCE 2005 it has been designed to report both KB873369 and KB900325 as missing
However, if you do skip KB873369 and you install KB900325 then the KB873369 will no longer be shown as missing.

The Windows Search 4.0 security update won't be shown as missing unless Windows Search 4.0 is installed.

Internet Explorer version scanning is pretty complex and looks at both the IE version and the OS.
It knows if IE6 on a system is eligable for KB2909921 and KB2964358 or only capable of KB2909921.
It knows if IE8 is eligable for KB2964358 and KB4018271 or only capable of KB2879017.
It knows to skip all that on an embedded os and directly look for KB4493435.

The .NET scanning on MCE will report 1.1 missing if it is, likewise for 1.1 SP1, Because they are needed by MCE Rollup2.

However, if you run it on any other version of XP then .NET 1.1 SP1 won't be reported as missing unless 1.1 is installed. My program won't suggest installing the .NET framework just because its missing.. unless its needed...

What it will do on every other XP, if it finds a .NET version installed, it will check what updates its lacking. It will display what .NET updates the system requires, but as i stated, it won't suggest installing something thats not needed.

You'll notice the menu also offers random information related to aspects of Windows XP.
that might expand into more sub menus at some stage.

   The Windows XP Update Cleaner (27/DEC/2019)

This Will Recover Lots of Drive Space for Windows XP Home, Pro, Media Center 2005 and Windows Fundamentals.
"WARNING!!" If You Have Just Updated Windows OR INSTALLED ANYTHING then YOU MUST Reboot BEFORE Running This.

This Removes The Following Large Folders

%SystemRoot%\ServicePackFiles
%SystemRoot%\$hf_mig$
%SystemRoot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$

It Also Removes All The Mini $KB Uninstall Folders and KB Logs from Windows Updates Spanning January 2002 to April 2019. And Clears Windows Temp and Current User Temp Folders.. File Not Found Just Means Its Not Their To Remove.

A reboot before using the cleaner is well advised incase an install you did has pending file changes laying in a temp folder.

This doesn't touch the registry at all, so it won't break codecs and plugins like most system cleaners by default do. It just looks for specific files and folders that are safe to remove, those which get left over by installers.

   The Windows XP Update Installer Side (This is Not ready Yet)

This will check the system for needed updates, and attempt to install them.

That means, If an update file is in the same folder "as my program" and your System needs it
then my program will install it.

If an update is needed and my program can't find it, then it'll tell you the file is missing.

This can be run over and over again if you need to add files, it won't re-install things.
It also understands the variances between Home, Pro, Mce, Wflp.

NOTE: While it will install the likes of KB955704 and KB952011 (if present)
It won't demand them or give an error if they're not found, Likewise for some others.

Essentially, Every "file not found warning popup" will be an update your system actually needs.

Just Remember, My Update Scanner can compile a Missing KB's list that covers most Optional and all Security Updates, this can install them if the files present. It will reboot at times, just run it again...

My advise for the Update system would be to place the windows updates and your chosen Internet Explorer version (be that the updates for 6.0 or the installer for IE7 or IE8)  and then run it.

If IE7 or IE8 installs then it'll reboot the system, re-run the script and it'll update the IE7 or IE8 and then Windows.

Only then would i move any .NET stuff into place (as .NET updating takes a long time)

I think WMP reporting will be a nightmare (as most WMP versions use a few updates that are the same per version) and then 4 or 5 that are not. This means that if a user had WMP 8, 9 or 10 (with updates) If they then installed v11, it would still need some of those updates again,
And to check for them is pretty problematic, as they already appear to be in the registry from the last time.

Maybe a way to test a DLL version i guess?, but right now my scanner depends on nothing besides the command prompt and ide like to keep it that way.

At some stage, when the Install updates side is set up, i might add the ability for users to add custom files.

Such as..  MyTweaks1.REG,  MyTweaks1.BAT  and  MyTweaks1.CMD

Likewise for..   IE6Tweaks.REG, IE7Tweaks.REG and IE8Tweaks.REG

and also..  WMP9Tweaks.REG, WMP10Tweaks.REG and WMP11Tweaks.REG

Which those in turn would be run, if my exe detected you had added your own registry settings or
tweaking files into the folder, while using those specific file names for them.

Like i said, No one has ever truly written anything like this.. that didn't need something else...

Some standard XP updates are superseded by Pos updates, that i have yet to bother with..
This reports what XP needs from SP3 to 2014 and Embedded from April 2014 to April 2019

I shall end this post with a screen shot of what Microsoft would consider a fully updated Windows XP Professional (that apparently just lacked IE8)  My scanner begs to differ the offerings compared to what's really missing...

Here, in the microsoft download catalogue currently sits KB3115461, a 13th of July cab file billed as 23rd of August (extract CAB with winrar, run the MSP)   It's certainly newer than KB2825642 and anything else apparently said to be on offer from its makers lol

Just Extract the  MSP file from the  CAB  and Run it  :)

Internet Gateway Can't Access The Internet FIXED

So your trying to run Windows and you can't access the internet, you found an Internet Gateway icon in your network control panel like this image

and when you right click to enable it, it says failed, and what ever you do you can't enable Internet Gateway? or access the internet?

This is down to Universal Plug & Play, a  UPnP setting in your router and you have two basic options.

The easiest solution is to just run UnPlug n' Pray  on the system with the Internet Gateway issue. This can be run again at any time to re-enable UPnP , so its a great tool,  Works on 98 upto XP and also supports WINFLP   :)

doesn't even need .net  :)

Remember GRC made "shoot the messenger" ' "Socketlock" and the legendary shields up online port and firewall tester. A well established and trusted source.

Your alternative solution is to log into your router and disable UPnP (this will vary by model)  so might be easier to google

How do i disabled UPnP on Router Name

Remember using the UnPlug n' Pray option only changes UPnP on the one machine, it has absolutely no interaction with your router or your homes internet connection (only changes the machine its run on)

Windows XP Update Cleaner (30/NOV/2019)

Windows Update Cleaner better known as  WindowsXPUpdateCleaner.bat

Is the cleanest safest XP system clean up tool as it changes nothing in the registry  and just makes drive space by binning useless stuff no longer needed.  You just save the TEXT file and then change the Extension from .txt to .bat and run it.. You can download it Here. Current version 30/NOV/2019

Right click on it and select RE NAME
rename it so its now  WindowsXPUpdateCleaner.BAT

its icon should change, if it hasn't then its called  .bat.txt
it MUST end in .bat

IF you have problems Renaming the file (god help u)  lol anyway if you do
click on FILE and then SAVE AS and on the box at the Bottom, click the Drop Down
select ALL FILES and then Type the file name in with the  .BAT on the end like so

Trying To Install Windows 7 required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing

Ive read may websites in relation to facing this Windows 7 Install Error

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step.

There are a number of solutions and theories out their and the majority don't work for most people, However, because there are multiple solutions some dumb people look for the simplest solution  and the problem here is this.. out of the multiple solutions only two are going to work for you on that specific machine you are using!

The first solution that works for everyone  is to install any form of windows XP, once that's installed run the windows 7 setup from within xp, select Full Install (not upgrade)  Then when asked what type of install, its the second option for a Full Install..

At this point it'll get to a stage were it actually shows you the hard disk or the virtual hard disk... DO NOT CLICK DRIVE OPTIONS and play with it.. Just highlight the drive and click next.. And their you have it.. Windows 7 will install...

The second solution is one that works for those with external DVD drives is this... After getting the message, simply go backwards to the box with the install button and then unplug the drive from a USB3 port and plug it into a USB2 port.

Don't have a USB 2 port?,  I guess you could always try a cheep and nasty USB hub that gives you access to 4 USB ports.. the cheep ones are often USB 2, consider it like an adapter rather than just a hub.. handy piece of kit today huh.. yet pile of crap back in the day.. Could maybe  also use a USB 1.1 extension lead too if you have no hub.

The tricky Third solution and tbh its far from a recommendation here  Is to go into your Bios and set your hard disk controllers to IDE, the problem here is sometimes a board will then disable access to your Second Sata drive (if you have one) Also some boards don't have this option. Whether it be IDE-SATA or IDE-RAID or SATA-RAID,  people still appear to face problems.

The Install 7 from within xp appears the simplest method for virtual issues.

RANDOM TESTING NOTES:

These are some ideas i had while facing this problem of Installing windows 7 on a Windows XP computer with Virtual PC 2007 and some of the ideas i tried. That'll give you an idea that i do know what I'm doing most of the time  and these notes may answer some questions your considering as possible solutions. So here are some other tricks i tried.

I setup a virtual drive and unticked hardware virtualization, This way it would be a universal virtual driver set always in use  Rather than anything related from My Own Board  being added to either OS used.

I Installed an XP, I then ran Win7 from within XP, selected full install, selected the drive and installed 7.

I then ran a program from within the running Windows 7 to back up ALL the drivers.  Smart idea huh..

Then i made an ISO file with just these drivers, then I created a new virtual machine, disabled hardware virtualization, selected the the option to Capture ISO, selected my win7 and began to install the win7 from fresh.

When i got the no CD/DVD error, i told virtual PC to capture the Drivers.iso i made and browsed to the ISO with the option on the windows 7 install box and selected my drivers iso.

It took a while (slow pc) but it listed all the drivers, i selected all hit next, took ages and failed on the Trio video driver. So i de-selected the trio tried the rest, It then took ages testing all the others again and at the end told me none were compatible. I also tried them individually.

This to me makes no sense at all,  while installing XP first will work for everyone, i am at a loss as to why when 7 is cleaned up & drivers backed up.. why they won't work...

I can only think it is a Text Mode Driver  issue and the drivers backed up are not text mode drivers, but the intricate differences isn't my field at all.

I also tried a number of textmode drivers designed for slipstreaming into Windows 7 and also Vista and none of those even appear when i tick "hide drivers that are not compatible" Nor did any of the usual XP text mode drivers.

Rather random the ones i backed up actually list but none are what its looking for... I suppose their could be text mode versions of those it lists, but i doubt they would be hook'able by Virtual PC's own kinda Bios.

The only solid solution as of the date of this post (October 2019) Is to install Win7 from within XP, and a full install, not upgrade with NO modifications to the partition XP made when you select the drive within 7's setup.
