Windows XP Service Pack 4

These are my random thoughts on what I would essentially call a Fan Made Service Pack 4 for Windows XP. Some hail it as epic, some slant it as untrustworthy... Let me know what you think of it in the comments and i shall give you my opinions on it as follows....

First off, it's a great idea and im sure it took a lot of work but it lacks a lot of legalities, the permission to use the reg tweaks is great but the implementation of them and the PosReady fix along with microsoft stuff released After April 2014 makes the pack illegal.

It would of been nice to have a semi legal release that just caps off the official life cycle of the OS. The removal of the need to validate media player 11 also causes legal issues with using it.

The reg tweaks should be a Folder under Admin tools with a Reg key for ON and OFF regarding each feature. The packs not sterile because it wont suit all users or network environments unless the user is pc savi to change these settings.

The fact its had the PosReady patch slipped in & yet it hasn't had the Download ActiveX stuff put in for "Microsoft Update" seams also really stupid to only have Windows Update included. If your going to try and integrate .Net 3.5 then clearly windows should be using Microsoft Update (update windows AND OTHER microsoft products) Such as Microsoft .NET

.Net 3.5 included but yet no PowerToys Included ?
why no TweakUI or even AutoRuns placed within the Program Files dir?
IE 8 and yet no Silverlight ?

I see 37 updates on windows update as of today (for PosReady) You realise a system will automatically break the law if auto updates are enabled. It's such a shame because this pack could of truly been an SP4 and then an optional version. Its a lot easier to End a Pack than make one that still essentially needs more. It also should of blocked out MSE and hid it on windows update to avoid offering users to install an AV that actually no longer works.. (win update offers the newer MSE which is clearly dead and an older version is needed) It doesn't even hide the update for the End of support notice, were was the imagination once this pack began?

Microsoft .NET 4.0 is offered on windows update (not .NET 4.5.2) this in turn (after installing 4.0) will bring an unleash a mass of 40+ updates relating to .Net 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 when a merged reg key for 4.0 could of had it offer 4.5.2 and cut down on a stack of the follow on updates.

I have tested the SP4 on Xp Home OEM, XP Professional (Corporate VLK) both harddrive tower based and i have tested it on a Windows 7 Professional running the Virtual XP-MODE with the XP Professional OEM, same results on all 3, it works. XPS Viewer, yet no taskkill.exe added to home. I clocked qefcheck is in and yet no permanent copy of qchain.

I mean if a packs going to break laws and step over the line, step off the kerb to do that bit more, why just tip toe, why that iddy didy bit after what must of been masses of work? to overlook the small easy tasks ? DirectX isn't anywhere near what it should be neither.  What about the patched UX theme dll, why was it not included?

This SP4.. It's such a cool idea and yet a waste of time using it. Even for offline gamers, the Dx Online updater tool is going to offer more DX components (once certain games are installed) at some stage it wont be safe at all to hook XP to the web to download something. Things change over the years.

It just leaves a lot to be desired really in what it could have been capable of. I will be sticking to my own BAT scripts to update a pre-installed XP environment offline and my own bat scripts when slipstreaming separate updates into a custom OEM replacement image for servicing systems.

A fantastic idea with to many ideas above its station and not enough imagination.

Choosing OR Automated Selection Finding the Right Windows 8.1

So you upgraded to 10 and wana downgrade to 8.1 or you just set up an 8.0 machine and your thinking theirs gotta be a faster way to get 8.0 right up to date with 8.1?

First remember Microsoft now allow users to download almost every Windows 8.1 (that's legal for the public) but clearly that's a lot of downloading just to find the right OS, you could use PIDGEN to determine your exact version of windows 8 or 8.1 (then use the windows 8.1 media creation tool to download an 8.1  (your 8.0 key will work with the 8.1 download) as long as you pick the right version,  IE,  Core, CoreN  (sadly you can't download the 8.1 with Bing  AKA CoreConnected  (unless you torrent a few ISO names)

How i built my 8.1 DVD and made Picking an OS  "Optional"
Ber in mind it is LEGAL to download windows 8.1, install it with NO serial number.. then go to Update and click Buy Product Key  (online) so it is worth having an 8.1 disk where you can PICK the version you want to install, and yet have a version that can Detect a Bios AND a Manually entered key..  heres how...

Download
Windows 8.1 CoreN  x86  and x64
Windows 8.1 Core Single Language  x86  and x64
Windows 8.1 Core  x86  and x64
(you only need them 3 legally speaking, don't download pro as it installs as Core and then wants Pro upgrade key.. so downloading pro will involve 2 keys and 2 activations, thats messy)
if you wish to download and add Enterprise, Enterprise N, CoreConnected and CoreConnected SL from a torrent  (then that's your choice)

So far (in the order of size & tidiest way to merge them) you have CoreN, CoreSL and Core

Number them like this

01 Windows 8.1 CoreN (x86)
02 Windows 8.1 Core Single Language (x86)
03 Windows 8.1 Core (x86)

make a COPY of CoreN and Name It

04 Windows 8.1 Professional N (x86)

 (open this copy in a WIM manager like Win ToolKit)

Click mount the image, once mounded, select  Upgrade Image (and select Professional)

Un mount saving changes... Do that for the 01, 02, 03 cores, and you'll have 3 pro's that install AS Pro!! (now giving you 6 versions rather than 3)

Now, make a Copy of Each Pro.. give them the name Professional WMC, mount each one and do the upgrade image to Professional WMC

Now (with them numbered and what not) and if you downloaded enterprise or what ever

Make a "copy" of CoreN x86  WIM file and call it install.wim

Then Microsoft Tool Kit, select Wim Manager and Import the x86 wims one by one in the order they should be from number (and save / rebuild WIM)

Then import the x64 wim files, when its finished select Rebuild
    and you will have them ALL within 1  install.wim
(optionally you can use   ESD2WIM-WIM2ESD-dism   to crush it into an ESD and save up to 1.2GB)
  SetUp from  ESD is only compatible with windows 8 or Higher...

Unlike windows 7, to be able to select a Windows 8.1 you actually need an ei.cfg file inside the disks Sources folder with the following information

[VL]

That forces the setup exe to list all the images inside the WIM or the ESD

If you don't have that  ei.cfg file in the sources folder then setup.exe WILL look at the motherboard for a Serial number in the Bios  (if it finds one it'll OK your key) and offer you an x86 or x64 for your serial. (thus guaranteeing your activation is easy and legal)

With the     EI.CFG    file in place

Remember the media creation tool downloads can take 8.0 or 8.1 keys so letting the setup exe and bios work with the WIM or ESD can find the exact version that was shipped with the system.

It Knows the Exact version of 8.1 your Product Key is designed for

It checks every WIM you imported into the one file against the SKU and product key
     then offers BOTH 86 and 64 for that specific OS...

OR you can have the EI.CFG    "INSIDE"   the sources folder and Choose an OS..
    (remember this is legal as they need a key and activation within 30 days)

Note that RWPortable WILL run in a PE setup environment, so if you stuck that in your rout, then before clicking Install you held Shift and pressed F10 to open a command prompt and typed   C: and hit enter (then typed RW and hit enter)  you could poke about the bios for the systems slick key (but that only gets you the key) Sadly the likes of PIDGEN wont run properly under PE environments.

BUT You could let setup.exe and your wicked ESD do the job for you by simply removing the CFG file to let setup find the motherboards product key.

For this i have created my own CMD file that is inside the root of my USB (the source i mainly restore 8.1 onto systems with)  sometimes i learn it was a windows 7 system, so the user is then forced with 2 legal choices.. put the right 7 bk in (get free upgrade to 10) or buy 8.1, a choice of which i can offer in hand with a Clean install of any legal os..

My CMD file looks On my USB for the ei.cfg,  If it finds it it warns me its in place and asks if i wish to remove it (and vice versa when its been removed)

Here it is running where i can choose an OS the user would later have to purchase

Detects the file and within windows you can see the file

It will then offer you these choices

After Deleting the file i get this screen

Now if offers the option to restore it and recheck for it

To begin with you need the  ei.cfg in your sources folder and a copy of it called ei.bak

then my script called   CheckKey.cmd   (placed in the root of your USB)

Then on the SetUp screen , be it choose Language, Region or the Big INSTALL button
you just Hold  SHIFT.. press F10 and type that C:  and hit enter

I have  TYPED    C:     then hit enter

WHEN IT CHANGES TO   C:\    type   CheckKey  and hit enter

Its main downside is you MUST  change to the USB path to run it..  I did put it into the boot.wim, so you can just type checkkey at the X:\sources    and that worked, but clearly it fails to accomplish a valid  IF EXISTS or IF NOT,  i did try running it also with the option to SETPATH
but that broke all access to cmd DEL and other aspects.
tbh its to much of a headache tryna remember the simple bits (when ya doing everything else to)
so alas.. one will have to type  C:  and hit enter before typing  checkkey.. shucks  lol

Ps
you could have 2 or 3 back up Configs,  then have a menu that will offer to remove, or restore an OEM, RETAIL or VLK  ei.cfg  ;)

Just remember, Legally speaking just picking your OS and running an activator isn't legal... but just picking the OS you fancy from a menu (then you use the buy key option and activate legally is)

This concept of CheckKey gives a VALID reason to own an A.I.O disk for servicing multiple machines in the I.T environment.

Updating the Official Windows 8.1 ISO Releases

Ok as slipstreaming goes its a pain with 8 and 8.1 due to the "Servicing Stack" updates mostly, so i have taken a totally different path to how i normally integrate updates into windows source disks and usb's for windows 8.1.

Firstly lets remember there is sometimes MORE updates for one type than another

EXAMPLE:
the x64 version has an update for windows that the x86 doesn't have (and vice versa)
it can also happen that there is an update for pro (thats not needed by home)

Having these updates in the same folder (IE, running a batch on home and there are also pro only updates in the folder) won't be a problem, DISM & Windows Installer will just skip it often with the basic message  "this update is not applicable for this version of windows"   ;)

Option ONE:  semi high tech
Integration wise, if you have 7 or how ever many versions of windows 8.1 (inside ONE WIM file) you have to unpack them & mount them, place the updates within a folder (you make) called  WINDOWS_UPDATES  for an x86 wim, place all the x86 updates in that, for an x64 wim place all the x64 updates in it.

Note that size wise, when you compile one or more x86 images (or x64) into ONE wim
only 1 copy of a file is actually stored (so 7 versions won't end up taking the space of 7 copies of every update) you will ONLY end up with 1 copy of each update file.. yet if you export 1 wim, it'll export with the updates, because you merged them all with updates inside (so adding updates to all wim files is important ;)

With the WINDOWS_UPDATES folder copied to the ROOT of each wim (after install the folder and msu files will be in the systems root regardless of their chosen drive letter or lable) you then have choices on how they'll be run....

A) manually by running the bat file you make (in the folder with the MSU files)
i called mine   0ImportantUpdatesX64.bat  (0 is so its first file in the folder)

Contents of BAT file are as follows
(make sure word wrap is off when making this in notepad)
and make sure its saved as a BAT.. not a TXT..
 0ImportantUpdatesX64.bat    not    0ImportantUpdatesX64.bat.txt
(name it x86 for the x86 folder, just in case things get more automated in your coding)

B) rather than making the bat file, you could add the code above to the setupcomplete.cmd


Your other option
Option TWO:  seriously low tech

keep a copy of the 2 update folders

EXAMPLE
DRIVE:   \x86\WINDOWS_UPDATES
DRIVE:   \x64\WINDOWS_UPDATES
with the MSU files in each (along with the batfile in each)
and after install, copy the folder to the root, right click & run the bat as admin
(the low teck solution does make it easier to keep an updated folder to hand rather than re-editing wims)

Clearly their are more hightech ways to get the FOLDER to move over using the setupcomplete.cmd but that's a lot more messing around, extra file copying that'll delay other stuff set with the CMD file, install failing if media is damaged and something can't be read.

This isn't the greatest of methods, but tbh copying a folder to the root and runnin a bat file isn't that hard right?


As for the moronic trolling comments i feel will follow this post... like.. what a joke.. why bother.. just use windows update....  ber this in mind.. some people use pre-pay dongles.. or have crap internet connections..  this is about Bandwidth, not just Automation!!

There is also 80+ optional updates needed by the so called NEW official iso files
    but they are Optional, not specifically important
(but you can grab them and add them to your folders or wims if you wish to...

Worried about your final WIM size if storing them inside?
when your finished making the final WIM.. Convert it to ESD
(that can knock well over a gig off its size)   ;)

Tbh.. i did manage to modify the Burf Windows update install script so it works on windows 8.1, but it clearly states not to distribute modified versions of it.. and as of yet.. hes not updated it..

Creating and Downloading Installation Media for Windows 10

You can now download the official Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft

If you have an x64 system (just download the x64 exe)
it can create x86 and x64 disks in any language

Both tools cover Home/Pro in Normal Core, N and Single Language
remember you can't install language packs onto an SL version (legally)
(Enterprise Edition is only available to company's and is a VLK, not an OEM)
Education Edition is oddly the same specifications as Enterprise yet offers VLK and OEM


Download the official microsoft windows 10 tool here
(watch what option your selecting, otherwise you will install 10 over your current OS)
choose the option for installing on another machine, then pick ISO or USB
Works with the Windows 7 ISO to USB

Q: Can i use a windows 8.0 or 8.1 Serial
A: No... even though upgrading is apparently free

Q: windows setpup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware
A: Read this, its dead simple here

Q: What Build version of windows 10 is this?

Windows 8 or 8.1 Won't Install

Having a problem installing windows 8 or 8.1 (or even windows 10)

A lot of old systems won't let you install windows 8 or 8.1 especially the x64 versions
but there is a really simple solution

When you get the error message after rebooting and it says

windows setpup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware

Don't click ok.. (or it'll force a reboot)

Just HOLD   SHIFT down and press  F10

When the command prompt opens simply type     msoobe
then press enter.. and then wait a moment...

The screen should go to the enter product key screen (enter one.. or hit skip)
continue with the setup options..

Afterwards type the word   EXIT   on the cmd box
when that closes, click ok on that wouldn't install windows error

Job done....

if typing msoobe gives an error, your CMD window may not be pointed at
C:\Windows\System32\\oobe
if its not, then  type   cd and press enter, then type  cd  again and press enter
then type   cd windows  hit enter,  type  cd system32  hit enter, type  cd oobe  hit enter
then type  msoobe and hit enter..

Creating and Downloading Integrate Installation Media for Windows 8.1

Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1?
You may wish to create a Windows 8.1 Install DVD before hand in case you wish to go back to 8.1

It is FREE to do this and 100% Legal, all you need is the Microsoft Tool and Your Instillation Serial

To find out your actual Product Key, use a windows product key explorer (google it)
(you don't need to do that if its on a Sticker on your machine ;)

Next all you need to do is run the MS tool from their site Here and select your language, and your version of Windows 8.1 and run it. It will create the disk Image for you :)
You can download windows 8.1 x86 (32bit) or the x64 (64bit) in Home & Pro for free

BUT TO INSTALL..
It Will need a your serial number AND Activation on line (as it wont install your OEM files)

ALSO NOTE:
any problems with the Drop Down menus on their tool , such as unable to select language, version or architecture, be sure to End Task on any External hard disks, i use a 2TB passport drive and when its loaded the tool doesn't show the windows logo then the drop down (even when i choose create ISO rather than usb.. so any problems use the "safely remove hardware" and end task on external hard disks  ;)

The ISO can also be later put on a USB using the with the Windows 7 ISO to USB tool

Q: Can i use a windows 8.0 Serial
A: Yes, but it may not activate if your serial was for SL and you used CORE (install SL)

Q: When you install Windows 8.1 Professional it just shows up as Windows 8.1
A: Professional is a store/2nd serial update, to fix that issue.. Mount the Core image (core OR core SL, or Core N) with Windows Toolkit and use the Upgrade image option and upgrade it to pro, then unmount saving changes, that will now install as Professional  ;)

Windows 8 and 8.1 Missing Application Updates and Missing Applications

People with Skype (on a laptop OR computer) could be vulnerable.
So you should check if theirs an update if your on windows 8 or 8.1!!!

I know a lot of windows 8 users hate it, many don't even explore it, in fact most are fed up looking in "Control Panel" and "Settings" just to find stuff previous windows held in the same location for ease of use...

SO.. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that they also split updates and moved them to "Store"

I have barely messed with windows 8 or 8.1, however today i got a strange file type i didn't know, normally id google that like *.extension, only windows 8.1 asked if ide like to look in the store (xbox users will be used to this interface)  anyways while looking in the store i noticed it said Updates!!
Im thinking wtf is this, so i clicks it and hits update and down come some updates that windows update is NOT showing me... to get to this screen click start, or press your windows key (then top right corner search for the word store)  But keep reading my post.. it gets even more bizarre.
Note their was around 19 updates their before i hit the screen shot...

So while these updates are coming down (and im still shocked Skype is their rather than in windows update)   I decided to hit Account and then go into My Apps.. their i find what came with my OEM version of windows 8.1, to my shock i see games that where essentially awarded to my account simply due to my windows serial number (but remember what you see in the screen shot below is linked to my Hotmail)  suddenly i feel like i have an apple id for windows...
NOTE i never Purchased any of these, they must be OEM gifted..

But frankly i am disgusted that my operating system came pre-instaled with Skype which has sat needing updates for god knows how long while as a messenger application has put my system at risk..

Windows XP SP3 x86 Delta System

Looking back over XP's life from its first bootlegged VLK release with the FCKW serial to the XP Delta Files created to be able to Store 16 Versions of Windows XP within a mere 930mb
yip, thats right, 9.10GB of data stored within 930MB... Seriously Outstanding...

Not only that, but when you MD5 test the images against the MDSN official microsoft images, the MD5's match.

A guy essentially used a program xdelta3.0z.x86-32 to look at 1 Specific
Windows XP Source / Disc Image, namely this version

Then with a catalogued listing of all the files within & the configuration, he then scanned the following versions of windows XP

The concept essentially removed "any duplicate file" from each of them that was already available within the original Retail Professional ISO.

In turn reducing each of the 15 images down to anything between 130KB  to  54.3MB

These were saved as .DELTA files

So on your hard drive you could store essentially 16 versions of Windows XP x86 and the total size was 930 megabyte. Delta Files = 341mb in total & the Pro Image = 589mb

One Single ISO and 15 DELTA Files

To reconstitute this 930MB back into 9,10GB all you had to do was place the Original ISO along with the DELTA files and the App into the same folder as the BAT file and run it. It took mere seconds on a reasonable machine to spit out the 15 new images alongside the original oem pro.

 Sadly the Indepth post about this was deleted by the user who set it up as he was trolled by a moron who apparently had a job and a life so insisted on step by step instructions. Ironic really as the guy who made & posted this gear also did a step by step guide & provided links to the Deltas & a Donor ISO file. Kudos to "LateShift" for this amazing set.

You can also get this same concept for Xp 64 Bit {x64} and Windows 2000 releases.

Windows XP x86 Off line Installing Updates (Home-Professional) POST UPDATED NOV 2019

With the death of Windows XP destined for the 8th of April 2014, it will no longer be supported by Microsoft.. which means it will no longer be safe to use online.  Chances are Microsoft will still allow the downloading of past updates released before its life cycle lapsed (just like they do/did with Windows 95, 98 and Millennium) The thing is though, the time you will be on line for with XP while getting those updates WON'T be safe to do so.

Also you need to realise that Windows 95, 98 and Millennium now have major issues trying to Install the Windows Update and the Microsoft Update  ActiveX Certificate To The Root Store...   Because that certificate expired in October 2013. The Xp certificate for the update site ActiveX  expires ?  (it will, at-least we no that)

So here i will help you to make your very own Windows XP x86 System fully (legally) up to date. And this post should serve as an educational based reminder for us who are getting older.

This is really easy to use and contains  Everything Required that was Legally on Offer   up to the  8th of April 2014  (updated to inc the IE8 update file from the 30th of April 2014 they gave away and the IE8 update from 2017 also provided outside the life cycle)  The pack also contains KB4012598  they gave away in February 2017.

Granted you could use that lads XP-SP4, but No way in hell my company will ever install that file on an End Users OEM Machine... or a Retail Installation... Your not legally entitled to install anything "made by ms"  after April 2014 besides, KB4012598  and  KB4018271. (along with the junk email filters for outlook 2007 up until November 2016)  It aint my rule or law, its just a fact..

     Manually Download Them KB numbers and Add them ONLY to the Optional Folder
   After Extracting the Cab's you can Run the MSP files using

A) Then your OS is an Illegal Version, it checks key types... DO NOT ADD WAG FIXES TO MY PACK OR PAGE!! OR LINK!!

A) Could be a number of reasons, older Cd Key used per say XP (no sp) or XP sp1 and only upto SP2 is available for that key
S) Activate Windows / Or Change Key, or change the Install State from Multi Processor to Free in the registry

A) Right click on my computer and select Properties, if it lists No Service Pack Level, then you need SP1a before SP3 can be installed

Q) Whats the best way to Install the .NET stuff?
A1) If you have XP MCE then start with 1.0 SP3 Updates folder (you can also add 1.1, 2.0 to 3.5) NOTE: 1.0 is their in mce already so it's best to atleast run the 1.0 SP3 updates.
A2) If you have Home, Pro or Corp, Start with 1.1, 1.1 SP1, 3.5 SP1 and End on 4.0 (but all are optional) 2.0 Is NOT needed if installing 3.5 SP1
S) For 3.5 you can just install 3.5 SP1 and then run 3.5SP1FULL.bat and that adds the runtime updates for the 2.0SP2 and the 3.0SP2 into 3.5 SP1.
   AS NOTED, You dont need to install OR run the 2.0 or 3.0 scripts If you install 3.5 SP1.
   I included the 2.0 and 3.0 scripts incase they are the .NET's you use for something and don't wish to install 3.5.
   Essentially for people who are stuck with ATi Radion cards or weird software that needed .NET 2 or 3, you can update just the .NET your stuck with by  using the individual script for that version.
   But be aware, Once Microsoft .NET 2.0 SP2 has been installed then Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 A.k.A KB951847 moves from Optional to Important on microsoft update site.
   Even though the included 2.0 SP2 updates apparently satisfied the 2.0 SP2 install.
  

Q) Were is Microsoft .NET 4.5, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 ?
A) They did not legally ship 4.5+ for XP, the 4.5+ = Windows Vista & Upwards only.

    The Correct WMP11 for MCE (24.5MB) was Digitally signed on the 4 January 2007 at 4:06PM (and it requires windowsxpmediacenter2005-KB925766 installing BEFORE MP11)
   This pack doesn't really support MCE, though many of the folder 3 & 4 updates will work IF MCE is at SP3 level, but DO NOT USE any WMP stuff from this pack on MCE!
      TweakUI  is also not to be used on MCE, because MCE has its own TweakMCE software..


Q) Were is firefox, winamp, vlc, iTunes and stuff like that?

A) Yes, BUT DON'T add any WAG cracks, patches, keygens or Reg files for circumventing Genuine Checks!

Q) Does this pack support Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PC's ?
A) Thats hit or miss, to begin with WINFLP is XP Service Pack 2 (and its SP3 update isn't even the same as the normal SP3)
S) For WINFLP you'd need to install KB958255 (which is the correct sp3 for winflp) You'd also find KB4018271 isn't compatible and also KB2686509 "on winflp" actually uses an Embedded update not a normal one like your typical Xp, why i have no idea.
   It also has less updates required than a normal XP, because WINFLP lacks varied XP features / services.
   Frankly it would be a real bad idea to use this pack on WINFLP because it might add services that are not complete..


Q) Will you be making an actual WINFLP pack like this one?
A) Maybe, i'm not sure yet, but i defo wouldn't use this pack on it.

Q) The year is 2097 and When i visit your blog, it says Warning Invalid Certificate?
A) Googles Blogger changed from allowing OPTIONAL HTTP connections to enforced HTTPS connections back in 2016 (and XP stopped Root Certificate Updates in 2014)
S) Computers are thick, unless you tell them its ok then its seen as not ok, and xp hasn't been told about certificates since November 2013!
   Just ignore it and click proceed, or use a newer browser, it's a real "Google Blog" you can trust it...

 They install by order of digital signature date, because the file names don't run in order and some are not needed until others have gone in. So rather than doing a double pass, It actually goes in by order of date with one single pass  ;)  It also performs a basic Windows XP Service Pack level test with bug out messages reminding the packs for SP3.
